Gold Coast

In 1959, Drs. Miller, Wilson, and L.G. Jones released Gold Coast, a dwarf variety similar to Green Velvet with its spineless round, tender pods, and plants that withstand drought and are prolific. It’s dwarf characteristic and long leaf petioles made it a desirable variety to ease harvesting woes. Gold Coast, developed from an earlier release called Louisiana Market (1950), had the same thick short pods as its parentage, making it great for canning or pickling. Seeds for Gold Coast were acquired from GRIN (PI 675128) and grown out for evaluation and seed increase in 2021, 2022, and 2023.In all 3 years, Gold Coast performed well in heat, drought, and was not susceptible to any diseases when planted by normal okra spacing (12”). The pods were spineless, round, and shorter and thicker than Green Velvet. Plants are dwarf in habit with shorter internodes, reaching a mature height of 5-6 feet. The longer petioles do make hand harvesting much easier. Gold Coast holds up well to canning, freezing and is excellent for fresh eating. Gold Coast is a perfect variety for home gardeners, especially those with limited space or limited mobility.56 days to harvest.
